Mrs Shaw suffers from poor eyesight due to glaucoma and also struggles with arthritis.

On Sunday (May 13th), Mrs Shaw fell while getting out of the shower and passed out.

Because of her disabilities, she has emergency panic buttons in her home if she gets into difficulty and had taught Louis how to activate them.

It was his barking that ChesterCare Telecare operative Sarah Mcloughlin was greeted with when she asked Mrs Shaw if she was alright.

A Terrier-cross in Sheffield was recently shortlisted for a prize at the Dogs Trust honours awards after saving her diabetic owner's life twice.

Mrs Shaw told the Daily Telegraph of Louis's role: "He's just a pet but I've been training him to hit the button just in case. But it's always been just a bit of a game. This is the first time he's done it for real."

Sleaford Cats Protection is hoping its Assisted Neutering Scheme will encourage more people to get their moggies spayed, which will have a significant impact on the amount of stray animals brought into the branch, the Sleaford Target reports.

Wood Green, The Animals Charity recently claimed it has taken in 23 pregnant or nursing mothers in the last four weeks, which will have a total of 138 kittens in the coming weeks.

Ruth Philp of the Sleaford and District Cats Protection said neutering may not be on top of everyone's priority list but it is hugely important to ensure no unwanted companions come into the family.

"This is why we would like to let people know that financial assistance may be available to eligible individuals towards the cost of neutering for their male and female pets," she continued.

The UK's largest dog welfare charity, is hoping education institutions in the UK will show their support for responsible dog ownership by backing the Paws up for Poop Scoop campaign.

Last year 75,000 children helped out with the campaign and the organisation hopes that even more will get involved this year.

To sign up, schools must visit the poop scoop week website.

Dogs Trust chief executive officer Clarissa Baldwin said dog fouling is an issue that the charity is determined to tackle and this awareness week will help to do just that.

"We want people to be able to enjoy clean public areas all year round and if everyone remembers the importance of picking up after their dog we can make a big difference," she continued.

For a small £150 fee, any mammal can get wed in Ann Clark's garden in Northamptonshire, the Daily Mail reports.

However, she says that some besotted owners go to extreme lengths to ensure their animals have the best day possible by hiring outside caterers, professional photographers and even chauffeur driven limos.

Owners spending thousands on their pampered pets is not a new phenomenon, with some even forking out up to £5,000 for a dog stair lift.

Ms Clark told the news provider that most people go beyond the basic package to try and provide a magical day for their pets.

"One lady spent almost £20,000 on her dogs' wedding – although that was very extravagant, and included a harpist and six-foot chocolate fountain. Most will spend a few hundred – possibly a few thousand," she continued.

Around 200 delegates from a number of different organisations turned out to take part in an informative and enjoyable day at the Kennel Club Building in Warwickshire.

A wide range of industry experts spoke to the visitors to outline the work currently being done by the KCBR and future plans of the organisation to improve the health and welfare of dogs.

Former EastEnders star Pam St Clement was due to make an appearance, however, a late cancellation gave visitors the chance to look around a number of trade stands.

Chairman of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust Mike Townsend said he was delighted with the way the one-day event went and the fact that he has had so much positive feedback shows others found it useful.

"I would like to thank the many people who came from KCBR organisations around the country for taking the time away from the great work that they do," he continued.

The Kennel Club has hailed the decision to introduce stronger guidelines that will result in more irresponsible owners punished for allowing their dog to attack someone in public.

Guidelines have been brought in by the Sentencing Council for England and Wales that would mean anyone who doesn't control their pooch could face a minimum six-month jail sentence.

Depending on the severity of an attack, people could be sent to prison for as long as 18 months.

It is hoped that the new rules will help provide courts with the necessary power to deal with the growing problem of irresponsible ownership.

Communications director for the Kennel Club Caroline Kisko said it is a good thing that sentencing will be much more consistent across the board.

"These guidelines go a long way in sending out the message that irresponsible ownership will not be tolerated and will help the courts hold bad owners to account," she continued.

Located on West High Street, the busy store beat off competition from over 175 of the charity's retail outlets across the UK to receive the national accolade once again.

PDSA stores raise funds by selling items donated by the general public, however, the charity noted that there was a 25 per cent year-on-year drop in items received in 2011.

The annual shop awards take into account profits achieved, year-on-year sales figures and volunteer management.

Chairman of the PDSA Michael Bolton said the team in Inverurie have shown great skill in gaining such a strong performance despite the challenging retail environment.

"Their continued success is no accident. They are a very proactive team, who constantly refresh the shop floor to meet the needs of their customers," he continued.

Owners of dangerous dogs that cause harm in public throughout the UK will face tougher punishment under new guidelines released by the Sentencing Council for England and Wales.

The body says people that fail to stop their pooch harming others should face a minimum of six months in jail.

These are the first guidelines issued to judges and magistrates for the convictions of people under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Official figures show there has been a rise in recent years in the number of people sentenced for dangerous dog offences to 1,192 cases in 2010.

The offence of allowing a pooch to attack others in public will carry a starting point of six months in jail, which could be increased to 18 months depending on the severity of the attack.
