The Blue Cross has joined a number of major pet charities across the country to call on the government to urgently overhaul the Dangerous Dogs Act following a BBC documentary that exposed the failings of the current regulations.
Death Row Dogs shown on the BBC on Tuesday (January 24th) followed the West Midlands police force as they captured terrified and neglected dogs kept in appalling conditions.
Director of external affairs Steve Goody said the film showed that some pet insurance customers and pooches are being unfairly targeted by the failings of the Dangerous Dogs Act.
“Any dog can be a safe and loving pet in the right hands, if socialised and trained properly from an early age. So-called ‘dangerous dogs’ are created by the irresponsible actions of their owners," he added.
Figures released by the NHS last week showed that the number of people admitted to hospitals with dog bites by the year up to March 2011 was up by 120 per cent.
