Dog insurance customers could face tough new laws when it comes to their pets fouling the region's streets and parks.
Councillors are considering introducing a number of dog exclusion zones that would help council staff maintain public ground more easily.
As part of the proposals, Dog Control Orders could be introduced, which would allow on-the-spot fines to be issued to dog owners who fail to clear up after their canines.
Many other councils up and down the country are already using the new rules and following a consultation they could be enforced in five main parks in the region – including Wilton, Ravensknowle, Greehead, Crow Nest and Beaumont.
Speaking to the Yorkshire Post about the issue, councillor David Sheard said: "We believe it is time for stronger action and the Dog Control Orders would allow us to enforce the rules more effectively."
In Sunderland, residents are working with local dog insurance customers to cut down on the amount of dog waste left in the town's parks.
