It is essential that pet insurance customers give their dog the correct amount of exercise required for the lifestyle of the breed, it has been claimed.
Kennel Club secretary Caroline Kisko said dog insurance subscribers must consider the pooch's age, size and lifestyle when deciding what diet to give them and how much exercise they will require.
Ms Kisko also suggested that microchipping is of vital importance in case the dog is lost as collars can fall off, while microchips are permanent. She also said that people should visit the local vet if your dog is off colour.
"Make sure that you are giving your dog the right amount of exercise and stimulation for their breed and make sure you spend time with them," she continued.
Recent research commissioned by Direct Line found that 33 per cent of dog owners admitted their canine was treated to a dessert of chocolate, biscuits or other sweets.
