Tourists descend on Cat town

Houting, in Taiwan, is fast becoming tourist hotspot.
As a run down mining town, Hougting does not fit the mould of traditional tourist attractions.
However, Houting’s appeal is not with the town itself but rather with its residents.
Hougton has a population of 300, 200 humans and 100 cats!
The large numbers of feline friends is causing tourists to flock to the area, many of whom tickle the kitties with feather sticks and buy rare cat souvenirs from street stalls.
The high cat population is largely due to 58 year old Chan Bi-yun. Chan inherited a number of cats several years ago and started to breed more.
She is dedicated to the health of her feline friends and puts a lot of effort into ensuring the cats, which wonder freely around the town, are clean and healthy.
Chan has also rallied the troops in the area, enlisting the help of local volunteers who provide free veterinary treatment and cat food.
Speaking in the Metro about her care for the town’s new stars, Chan said “I started raising five cats that belonged to a neighbour who passed away nine years ago and they gave birth to more and more kitties,
“Now I feed about half of Houtong’s cat population.’
